Teleological language

Dawkins is not the first or only biologist to use the intentional stance in evolution:

  • Huxley (1984), comparing nature to a gardener:
    • The cosmic process ... employs frost and drought to cut off the weak [emphasis mine].
  • "struggle for existance" etc.
  • Check note in Dover 2000.
