< Back to 'Jaunts' index | Galleries: Gloucestershire This jaunt is approximately 70 miles, and mostly flat. It took me a summer afternoon and evening. I started at Gloucester Station and went south to Bristol, but the opposite would probably work just as well -- in fact, since the hills are at the Bristol end, it may work better. The route is not very economical when it comes to maps: the explorers are "Gloucester and Cheltenham", "Wye Valley & Forest of Dean", "Thornbury, Dusley & Yate" and "Bristol & Bath". From Gloucester station, head for the docks. It's worth stopping on the way for the gothic cathedral. The site has been a religious one since 678, and parts of the present building date to 1089, when a monastery was founded.[1] The cathedral includes monuments to King Edward II, and to Edward Jenner, or smallpox vaccine fame.
