St Phillip's Cathedral

St Phillip's Cathedral

Photoblog: 18 Aug 2007

The Anglican cathedral in Birmingham, with its first Bishop, Charles Gore, outside. The building was constructed in 1715 as a parish church, when St Martin's proved insufficient for the city's growing population. It was consecrated as a cathedral in 1905 when Gore split the Diocese of Worcester to create the Diocese of Birmingham. Because of its origins as a parish church, it is the third smallest cathedral in England, after Derby and Chelmsford.

The grade I listed cathedral is of brick faced with stone, in the Baroque Style. The original architect was Thomas Archer, though it was enlarged in the 19th century by Birmingham architect J.A. Chatwin. Stained glass windows are by Edward Burne-Jones, and were saved from bombing in WWII by the civic society.

How to leave your comment

Comments can be made at this photo's flickr page, here. To leave comments on that page you will require a Yahoo login.

I am currently working on a simpler way of adding comments to this page (and a far less time consuming one for those without a Yahoo login), but for now, use flickr.
