Not really sure what they are. Look too small to be plover or knots? Not quite the right bill for dunlin. The sanderling (Calidris alba) description fits quite well: 20cm (8in), found on a sandy shore, ceaseless in their movements (they were running back and forth with every wave that came in)...

Are you sure? I took another look through the bird guide and the two look very similar, but:
- Grey plover are described as 28cm which seems a bit big for these
- The beak shape appears to fit that of the sanderling far better than the plover
- The grey band around the neck looks more like that for the sanderling than the plover
- They were on a sandy Atlantic shore, not an estuary, fitting the sanderling description better than the plover description...
