Britain's second oldest Cistercian monastery. Situated on the River Wye in monmouthshire, just over the border into Wales from England. The abbey was founded by Walter de Clare, Lord of Chepstow, on May 9, 1131, and surrendered to Henry VIII on September 3, 1536 by Abbot Wyche. In the 18th century wilderness and heritage tourism became popular and the ivy clad ruins drew visitors -- including Turner and Wordsworth. Wikipedia.
