Somerset is a shire county of 880,000 people in south west England, bordering Bristol, Devon, Dorset, Gloucestershire, and Wiltshire, and with a coastline on the Bristol Channel. The county is largely rural, featuring hill ranges in the Mendips, Quantocks and Exmoor National Park. The centre of the county is the lowland Somerset Levels, an area of wetlands. The county includes the historic city of Bath, and England's smallest city, Wells, as well as the seaside resort of Weston-super-Mare.

North Somerset

North Somerset

The North Somerset district includes the towns of Portishead, Clevedon and Weston-super-Mare, and borders the city of Bristol and the Bristol Channel.

Somerset Levels

Somerset Levels

The Somerset Levels are a large area of wetlands in the centre of the county between the Mendip and Quantock hills. Formerly part of the Bristol Channel, they were drained in the 17th century, and are crossed by many artificial rivers.

Bath and North-East Somerset

Bath and North East Somerset

Bath was a prominent Roman city built on the site of hot springs, though much of its architecture dates from the Georgian period. It lies on the River Avon in the North East of the county, a few miles upstream of the city of Bristol.
